Deadline for paper returns for the last tax year. Online returns have until 31 January.

HMRC’s general deadlines, in date order from today. Your own dates can differ depending on your VAT periods, accounting year end and circumstances, so treat this as a guide and check with us.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Mandatory since 6 April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000. Quarterly updates are due on 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May.

    Second payment on account for the last tax year is due, if you make payments on account.

    MTD for Income Tax quarterly update

    Quarterly update due for the period 6 April to 5 July, for sole traders and landlords within Making Tax Digital.

  9. 5 October 2027

    Self Assessment

    Register for Self Assessment

    Tell HMRC by this date if you need to file a Self Assessment return for the first time for the tax year that ended on 5 April.

Rolling deadlines

Within 60 days of completion

Capital Gains Tax on UK property

Report and pay Capital Gains Tax on the sale of UK residential property within 60 days of completion.

On or before each payday

Payroll (RTI)

Employers report pay and deductions to HMRC through Real Time Information.

1 month and 7 days after the period

VAT returns

Most VAT returns and payments are due one calendar month and seven days after the end of the VAT period.

9 months and 1 day after year end

Corporation Tax

Most companies pay Corporation Tax nine months and one day after the end of their accounting period, and file the company tax return within 12 months.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now live

Since 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates using compatible software. From 6 April 2027 the threshold falls to £30,000.

UK residents who sell a UK residential property with Capital Gains Tax to pay, such as a second home or buy-to-let, must report the sale and pay the tax within 60 days of completion.
